Located in Granada's old Moorish quarter is Albaycin, this historical city center is well known for its tranquility and uniqueness. One of the most brilliant monuments of universal architecture can be found here, in the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th century. This compound of impressive buildings including the summer palace called Generalife, stands at the foot of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city below and the fertile plain of Granada. At the center of the Alhambra stands the massive Palace of Charles V, an outstanding example of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Other monuments found in the city include the Cathedral, the Monastery of La Cartuja and the Monastery of San Jeronimo.
